With less than a month to go until graduation, Caleb runs into Nathan Rhodes at a house party. Nathan is a star hockey player for Western Michigan University and finally ready to step out of the closet. He’s also the guy who broke Caleb’s heart in high school. Nathan’s determined to make amends for what he did four years ago, but Caleb isn’t willing to risk getting his heart stomped on again. With only a few weeks left before they go their separate ways, it’ll take all of Nathan’s creativity and help from some interfering friends to convince Caleb to give him a second chance.
Bully Exit The Midwest Series Volume 1 Brigham Vaughn Books
Caleb and Nate met in their senior year of high school. Caleb wasn’t sure of his sexual orientation, but he knew he was sometimes attracted to guys and girls. Nate was pretty sure he was gay, but was in no way prepared to act upon his desires. When Caleb catches Nate’s eye, they begin a hidden affair – mostly innocent – that ends in disaster on Prom night.
Now, it’s four years later and though they’ve been at the same university, they’ve not met up again. Until now. It’s one month before graduation and when Nate sees Caleb at a party he just knows he has to do what he can to both let Caleb know how much he’s changed, how sorry he is and how much he’d like to start over again.
Caleb has been carrying around a lot of pain and anger from the incident in high school and can’t let it go. With the urging of his friends and family and a relentless pursuit by Nate, he finally agrees to sit down and hear Nate’s side of the story.
In the end we get a very solid HFN that looks promising and a very satisfying end to the pursuit.

I really liked this book. I was worried because I don’t like “second chance loves” as a general rule. (For me that first meet is what really pushes my buttons) but in a way we get that too as a series of flashbacks into the boy’s high school life.
There is lots of talk of sex and some uncomfortable discussions of past lovers, but only one real sex scene between the MCs. So, to me, this reads as just barely a NA book and almost a YA book.
I appreciated, however, that the reactions of both guys felt pretty authentic and age-appropriate.
If you are a fan of second chances, college romance and geek/jock pairings – give this one a try!

Bully Exit The Midwest Series Volume 1 Brigham Vaughn Books Reviews
I think I left the book feeling super unsatisfied... I mean I liked the idea of the story even if it is one that has been written beforez (but what hasn't lately)
But I just didn't feel the connection and felt like the characters were lacking something. I hated Caleb too. I think nathan at least seemed to come to his senses about life. Caleb even though he was hurt acted like a little child through it all.
Oh well we can't like them all right?
I'm a huge fan of the second chance tropes. That is one of my favorite themes to read of in a book.
Nathan made a huge mistake back in High School. He and Caleb had a secret relationship back then because Nathan was so deep in the closet. When something happens to scare Nathan about his and Caleb's relationship , he hurts Caleb in a pretty awful way. Flash forward a few years and they see each other at party.
Caleb is furious and in no position , emotionally and mentally, to forgive Nathan. Nathan , though is stubborn and won't let go of his second chance of righting a wrong. With the help of some friends, the advice from a really great mom, and finally letting go of the past these two gents finally have another chance at what good be a love they write stories after.
I felt for Caleb. I really did. It's not easy forgiving a betrayal such as that. I felt for Nathan because he was a kid and he saw no other way . With a father like his, it was understandable but still I wanted to slap some sense into the buffoon. This was a pretty solid story. However, I could have done with less flashbacks. They got annoying at some point. That's my only complaint.
I loved Lowell and I really want his story and Brent's of course. I also feel like there's going to be more of Micah but he is a jackass. Maybe there's something redeemable in the guy though. I hope in the sequel we get to see more of Caleb and Nathan too. Just mentions of how their relationship is progressing after college and what not.
(That prep school job though sounded perfect by I'm so glad of the outcome with that.)
****Some possible spoilery things****
At first I thought this was going to be just another going to college gay romance book. I was so wrong! I really liked the way Ms. Vaughn tied together what happened in high school between Caleb and Nathan with the present, and slowly revealed _why_ what happened did. I didn't expect what had occurred with Nathan, and was completely behind Caleb's reasons for not wanting to give him another chance, regardless of his present intentions--which was sort of silly of me, because I do think people deserve second chances; it's just hard when you have been hurt, and I identified with Caleb, but at the same time was a little frustrated by his inability to forgive and move forward. At the same time, I'm twice his age and have learned a lot in that time. People learn a lot just in the time they are in high school at 17-18 years old and then graduate from college, for that matter, which is really part of the theme of the book, I think. Four years can make a big difference. To find out that Nathan really _did_ have a strong reason, in his mind, for his actions the night of the prom--and I think it was brilliant to leave that until later in the book--made me reconsider his actions in the present completely. He really did mean what he was telling Caleb. He had thought he was protecting Caleb from his father, and Nathan was afraid of his father as well.
While Caleb had the freedom to express himself and the support of his mother, Nathan being stifled by an overbearing father took the heart out of his life. I love that they reconnected at the party and it made Nathan determined to rectify what he'd done in the past, despite Caleb's incredible stubborness. I really liked that Nathan wanted to take the job that wasn't the easy, cushy one because he could do more good there, as well as it being in the same place Caleb was going to be.
The development of the secondary characters was also really good. I loved Lowell. Everyone needs a friend like him. The kind that will give you no-nonsense advice, and then feed you ice cream. And Brent was interesting as well--sort of wishing he could do what Nathan was in terms of coming out but still not quite sure. But Lowell was adorable.
I am looking forward to the rest of the books in this series, as well as exploring other books by Brigham Vaughn. This was the first book of hers I've read, and I wasn't disappointed. I keep finding new authors I like! I am happy and horrified at the same time, because my TBR list is expanding exponentially. -) Which, I suppose, in the long run is a good thing. It will be a long time before I run out of good things to read.
I would definitely recommend Bully & Exit. I didn't even mention Nathan is a hockey player, did I? Or that Caleb is into theatre. I think there's a reason my reviews are so odd. I write about the feels and forget some of the other, somewhat important details. Nathan being a hockey player is part of what prevented him from coming out in the first place. And one of the reasons his father was so macho with his, "I will not have a gay son." (Well, I think his father had a lot of issues, personally). But yes, hockey scholarships for college. Sorry about that.
